What is UTRU Cooking Up?
You may be wondering what UTRU is doing to advocate for transit...well, aside from being a voice for the transit rider while communicating with transit agencies and setting up local chapters to advocate for on-the-ground change, UTRU is also working on a few initiatives to increase transit advocacy across the state.
This month, we want to tell you about the Community Advocacy Training for Transit (CATT) Initiative, which is designed to increase community involvement, awareness, and advocacy for transit by holding community-based trainings that discuss items such as the history of transit in Utah, how rules around zoning affect our lives, the role communities, cities, and the state play in transportation policy, and how individuals can play a deciding role in transit-related policy-making.
In Phase I, UTRU intends to provide training to 15 communities along the Wasatch Front that are currently underserved by transit, either due to low or no access to transit in terms of frequency and/or coverage or because transit in communities isn’t providing maximum economic potential because service, though it exists, doesn’t go to where the people need it to go.
We are currently raising funds to help get the initiative off the ground - we are currently seeking $10,000 to do so by applying for grants and by looking for support from individual donors (if you are interested in becoming an official sponsor, reach out to our Executive Director at curtis.haring@utru.org to learn more) to cover the upfront costs associated with the project. |
